Pilates

Pilates is total body conditioning.

Pilates concentrates on the core's SMALLER MUSCLE GROUPS. These are stabilised and strengthened, creating a strong centre that works in conjunction with the larger muscle groups.

Most sports and exercise routines focus on larger muscle groups. The muscles become bulky and inflexible, while smaller muscle groups are not utilised or strengthened.

Its creator Joseph Pilates, was working on the rehabilitation of interned and chronically ill patients during World War 1. While interned on the Isle of Man in 1918, he devised resistance equipment from springs for the bedridden. These have been developed into the Pilate techniques and exercise apparatus known today.

Pilates exercises focus on creating a strong centre or core, they promote muscular flexibility and proper musculoskeletal alignment. This is unique and enhances the co-ordination between muscle groups that stabilise the body. This leads to a better range of movement and flexibility, resulting in a body that operates more efficiently.

Simone de Cunha
Pilates Instructor

Simone discovered Pilates whilst studying to be a Personal Trainer in 2000, she found the method to be extremely functional and beneficial to both herself and her clients.

She went on to study with two of the most respected schools in the industry - Stott Pilates in 2002 and Polestar Pilates Education in 2005. Simone has also studied pre and post-natal Pilates and functional movement, and attends various industry workshops. She has taught corporate matwork, studio Pilates, and rehab alongside a physiotherapist in Sydney.

A ‘sitting’ environment greatly contributes to lower back pain, a weak abdominal wall, mental and physical fatigue. Pilates is a low-impact, non-jarring, movement practice creating strong and lean muscles, and revitalising body and mind. Pilates is also used as a tool for rehabilitation worldwide.

Simone has a passion for the importance of core control, functional strength and the fantastic benefits of pilates. Simone prefers to look beyond the square and provide her clients with a functional and integrated approach to their exercise achieving outstanding results.
